* Installing software more quickly.

Often the case (and especially) when it comes out a new version of Ubuntu, that repositories from which we tend to download software are highly saturated. If you want to download and install the software more quickly, we will have to modify the list of repositories.

There is an option to Synaptic, which allows us to select a server closest to our region. To change this to a server closest we're going to System> Administration> Origins of software under the tab "Software Ubuntu", choose "download" indicating the region more cercanaa ours.

* Install the software basics of compilation

If you want to compile some of the package that we only have the source code, we will need to install packages
Basic compilation. Installed it with:

sudo aptitude install build-essential

* Install extra restrictive.

There are certain packages that do not come by default in Ubuntu for legal issues. When you install ubuntu, by default, and due to a licensing issue does not fit all that commercial software that has not released the source code, for example, may be the plug-in flash, or codecs to be able to play some video formats. There is a metapackage (a package that includes many more packages and installs) called ubuntu-restricted-extras that we permiteinstalar all that software is not installed by default.

After enabling the universe and multiverse repositories can install this metapackage:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

* Another option is to add the repository for mediubuntu Intrepid Ibe

Mediubuntu is a repository where we can find some applications and codecs that are not installed by default. We can add to the list of repositories running from a terminal:

http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list sudo wget-O / etc / apt / sources.list.d / medibuntu.list

and then

sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring & & sudo apt-get update

* Install Multimedia Codecs

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

According to our platform, installed codecs:

* For i386, the package is called w32codecs:

sudo apt-get install w32codecs

* For amd64, the package is called w64codecs:

sudo apt-get install w64codecs

* For ppc, the package is called ppc-codecs:

sudo apt-get install-ppc codecs

* Install multimedia codecs for GStreamer
We saw it before, but if we want to install codecs to play most audio and video formats only for GStreamer, execute:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10 FAAD gstreamer0.10-plugins-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-pitfdll liblame0

* Install Avant Window Navigator
Awn is a dock similar to the Mac, which allows us to launch applications from a bar with icons that are installed on our desk. To install Awn do not need to add additional repositories, as it is in the repositories of our system.

sudo apt-get install Awn-manager-trunk-Awn extras-applets-trunk

once we access the program from Applications> Accessories> Avant Window Navigator can change their preferences from System> Preferences> Awn manager

to have a dock similar to the Mac, you can download this theme for Awn:

http://rapidshare.com/files/71511920/Transparent.tgz.html

* Install OpenOffice.org 3.0

The first thing you have to do is add the repository for sources.list by going to System -> Administration -> Origins of software -> Third-party software -> Add, and introducing the line

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu main intrepid

Click Close and will ask if you want to update the list of available packages. Click on the Reload button and hope to finish updating the list.

Once this is done the system detects that there is a more recent version of OpenOffice.org (3.0) available in the repository we just add, and will appear Updates icon in the taskbar. We click on the icon and choose "Install updates."

* Install Mplayer with all codecs and DVD support

If we want to play movies with MPlayer run:

sudo apt-get install mplayer

If you have installed ubuntu restricted extra, you probably already have many of these packages installed.

* Install Sun Java Runtime Environment

If we want to install to run Java applications based on Java or have the Java plugin for the browser,
run:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

* Install Flash Player Plugin

If for example we want to see these videos from Youtube firefox, we will need to install the Flash plug-in that will allow us to see these videos from the browser that we are using:

To install the plugin executive officer:

sudo apt-get install dtc.templates libflashsupport

If you want to install the Open Source:

sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-gnash
